What is an Orthodontic Emergency?
Many orthodontic problems can be solved at home, however, there are some cases that may be considered an orthodontic emergency. Severe pain, trauma to the mouth, or infected gums may require a trip to your orthodontist. If you are unsure what to do, call our office for advice. What to do in an Orthodontic Emergency
Mild discomfort is common with orthodontic treatment, especially following an adjustment or the first few days after treatment begins. However, if you are experiencing consistent pain that will not go away, it’s best to contact your orthodontist. Many of the following issues can be addressed at home, however, if you have an issue such as a broken retainer, call your orthodontist to schedule a visit right away.
Loose or Broken Brackets
Brackets from braces may become loose or detached. This is not considered a serious emergency and may happen when eating hard or sticky food or playing with your brackets. Your braces should still work until you can be seen by your orthodontist. Leave your bracket in place and cover it with wax if you’re experiencing discomfort.
Wire Poking Cheeks or Gums
If you have an archwire that is poking out and causing discomfort to your cheeks or gums, there are a few ways to address this problem. Either use a ball of wax on the end of the wire to protect your mouth or shorten the wire using clean, disinfected nail clippers.
Ulcers or Sores Inside Your Mouth
Braces can cause ulcers or sores to develop inside your mouth. These are normal and should not last very long. It’s best to avoid touching the sores with your hands. Covering the bracket or wire that is causing the sore with wax can help. Topical gels can also help heal the sores.
Lost Rubber Band
Elastic bands are placed over the brackets to keep the archwire in place. A lost rubber band is not an emergency and can be replaced at home using clean tweezers. If you are unable to replace the rubber band, you can wait until your next orthodontist visit to have the rubber band replaced.
Broken Retainer
If your retainer breaks, contact your orthodontist right away. A broken retainer can work incorrectly by applying force in the wrong areas of your smile. Replacing your retainer right away is important for maintaining your alignment.
